19 Facts About Johnson's Shut-Ins State Park

Growing up, I used to visit many of the gorgeous state parks that Missouri has to offer.  Whether it was going fly fishing at Bennett Springs, or simply going on a bike ride through a smaller local park, the beauty Missouri State Parks has to offer is phenomenal.

And, one of those state parks we used to visit was Johnson's Shut-Ins.  Since we have been buying lots of land in Missouri, it has us reminiscing about our old home state.  In turn, here are 19 cool facts about Jonhson Shut-Ins State Park...

1.  It is located in Reynolds County, Missouri, on the East Fork Black River.

2.  The park covers 8,781 acres (3,554 ha).

3.  The name "shut-ins" refers to a place where the river's breadth is limited by hard rock that is resistant to erosion.

4.  The rock formations in the park are made of rhyolite porphyry and diabase dikes.

5.  The shut-ins are a series of waterfalls and rapids that are created by the river flowing over the hard rock.

6.  The shut-ins are a popular swimming and recreation area.

7.  The park also offers hiking, camping, fishing, and picnicking.

8.  The park was established in 1955.

9.  It was severely damaged by a flood in 2005, but has since been rebuilt.

10. The park is home to a variety of plants and animals, including deer, turkey, and bald eagles.

11.  The park is a popular destination for school field trips and family vacations.

12.  It is also a popular spot for weddings and other special events.

13.  The park is accessible year-round, but some facilities may be closed during the winter months.

14.  There is a $7 entrance fee for adults and $5 for children ages 6-11.
