Why Interpersonal Skills Matter For 2024
With 2024 right around the corner, one can't help but be excited for the possibilities the new year will bring. Over the past 3 years or so, COVID has changed the way businesses operate, and frankly, what employees expect from a job. Specifically, workers are expecting to work from home, and employers that aren't willing to accommodate, instantly find themselves at a disadvantage.
But what does this "individualization" of a person's work environment (aka, their home), mean for how they interact with their supervisors and fellow co-workers? I mean - interpersonal skills are still required to not only survive, but thrive. So how does one do that in a digital age, with your work team spread out across the country? Well, here are a few of our top tips for making your interpersonal skills phenomenal for 2024.
1. Be yourself
Yes, this is often overlooked, especially in an age of having "second selves" and alternative portrayals on various social media platforms, such as Instagram or Facebook. Yet, think about how people act online, and oftentimes, it's drastically different than how one would act in person. In turn, don't forget this test. Just be yourself, which is also known as being authentic or genuine. Your boss likely hired you because of YOU, and the value YOU bring to the table. Never forget that.
2. Meet daily
At our company, we do quick video conference calls to check in at the beginning of each work day. This act not only plays a part in accountability, but it helps us have that connection to our employees and colleagues. We believe this video interaction and chat - on a daily basis, gives us all something to look forward to, and it allows us to get to know our coworkers on that "gut" level. In turn, you will get a feel of the likes, and dislikes, of your work team, which helps with anticipation and productivity.
3. Have integrity
This one seems obvious, but at that same time, it's easy not to have it in a digital work environment. On a basic level - do what you say you are going to do. Are you are going to complete 3 reports by close of business? Then complete 3 reports.
Are you going to close 2 sales today by 5pm? Then close 2 sales.
Don't have the end of the work day roll around, and it be apparent you watched Youtube videos all day - not doing most of your work. Even from afar, a wise boss will be able to sniff our laziness and lies. Simply do what you said you would do - and trust builds extremely fast, giving you even more autonomy. A wise mentor said to me once...."It's not what you do, but what you do daily". Doing these basic tasks, consistently and on a daily basis, will sharpen that interpersonal communication blade, making you a highly sought after asset for 2024.
